Stamford American's social program - using the award winning Second Step methodology - promotes skills for learning, empathy, emotion management and conflict management.

For over 25 years, structured holistic learning programs have shown to improve pro-social skills and behavior by 50% leading to a 10% gain in academic improvement. Pro-actively combating bullying, Second Step works to improve behavior, positivity and academic performance. The social curriculum teaches these critical life skills weekly to all students from Nursery through Grade 5.

From Grades 6 through 8, we use the Stepping Up and Stepping Ahead programs on alternate weeks to cover more advanced areas of personal and social education in further preparation for more advanced education and beyond.

The aim of Stamford’s Advisory Program is to develop student’s well-being, both socio-emotionally and academically, in the spirit of the IB Learner Profile, as internationally minded, skilled, life-long learners.

Our Advisory Program and Curriculum has been developed based on recommendations from the Collaborative for Academic, Social & Emotional Learning (CASEL) content as well as looking at pastoral contents from leading practitioners across the USA, UK and Australia, to create a unique program for Stamford that encompasses our international context and our local surroundings. The curriculum is vertically aligned, so that students progressing through the grade levels at Stamford, graduate with a strong foundation of social-emotional independence, internationally-minded views and skills as life-long learners.

Our program and our students are supported by Advisors, Heads of Grade and Deputy Principals. We have high expectations of our students and embrace the attributes of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile. As such, we create an environment and expectations in our school where all feel safe and can thrive in addition to encouraging all students to become responsible, self-regulating, contributing citizens of the school and the world around them.

Second Step is a program developed by the Committee for Children a non-profit organization helping students in over 70 countries.
